The History of the Michigan Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta
The Michigan Alpha chapter of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity was established at the University of Michigan (U of M) on November 28, 1864. It was the first chapter of Phi Delta Theta in the State of Michigan and the 16th chapter in the nation. Phi Delta Theta was the 7th fraternity established on the U of M campus.
Rise to Prominence and Leadership in the U of M Greek System
Despite a strong start, the chapter dissolved in 1869. During 1887, Michigan Alpha was reactivated and went on to enjoy 112 years of continuous operation.
By the early 1900s, Phi Delta Theta was regarded as one of the top fraternities on campus boasting membership of campus leaders, star athletes and students who aspired to high standards of achievement.
Between 1902 and 1903, the chapter acquired land at the corner of Washtenaw and South University to build a new chapter house. Renowned architect Albert Kahn oversaw the designing of a Georgian Revival style red brick mansion that became known as 1437 Washtenaw Avenue. The structure was first occupied by members in the fall of 1903 and currently is the oldest fraternity house on campus still owned by the entity that built it.
Prominent students such as 1940 Heisman Trophy winner, all-time Michigan football great Tom Harmon, early 1940s track star Bob Ufer (who later became the legendary voice of Michigan football as an announcer for 36 years), All-America halfback of the 1947 National Championship football team Bob Chappuis put Michigan Alpha in the spotlight.
Both Harmon and Chappuis appeared on the cover of Time Magazine while they were students and members of the fraternity. Numerous other outstanding Wolverine scholar-athletes contributed to the fame of the chapter on campus. Phi Delt Theta's members were also known for their dominance in intramural sports and the Mud Bowl.
The annual Mud Bowl tradition was started in the fall of 1934 when Phi Delt member E. Reed Low '37 challenged the "house across the street" (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) to a spirited match of football. Phi Delta Theta went on to win the balance of the 65 annual Mud Bowl battles with SAE from 1934 to 1998 when the rivalry matches ended. During this time period, the Mud Bowl rivalry between Phi Delta Theta and SAE became one of the most revered U of M homecoming traditions.
Throughout the balance of the 20th Century, Phi Delta Theta was a pillar of the U of M Greek System. The fraternity maintained a reputation for strong brotherhood, competitiveness in intramural athletics, robust social activities and philanthropic contributions in the community.
The Third Refounding and Return to Excellence
Despite its long record of achievements and position as one of the largest houses on campus, the Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters suspended Michigan Alpha's charter in the fall of 1998 for violations of various policies of the national fraternity.
Shortly after this action, the Phi Delt Headquarters leadership and the Michigan Alpha Alumni Association Board of Directors developed a plan to refocus the chapter on the fraternity's best traditional values while placing new emphasis on leadership development. The Alumni Association decided to take advantage of this brief closure period by investing approximately $500,000 to completely renovate the historic chapter house.
After four years of careful planning and hard work by Michigan Alpha alumni, the Phi Delt Headquarters granted the chapter status as a colony on November 9, 2002. The colony status made the chapter eligible for reactivation once stringent standards were achieved.
During the next two years, the membership of the colony struggled to attract students who were willing to commit to the vision of restoring the fraternity to greatness while abiding by the Phi Delt Headquarter's new "Alcohol-Free Housing Policy" that banned alcoholic beverages from all chapter houses of the fraternity across the country.
By the spring of 2003, the colony was granted full voting membership in the U of M Interfraternity Council. The colony spent the next 18 months building the organizational structure of the fraternity while recruiting new members to reach the total number required for the chapter to be reactivated by the Phi Delt Headquarters.
After a strong rush during the fall of 2004, the colony achieved the membership requirements and completed other steps that led the Phi Delt Headquarters to reactive Michigan Alpha's charter. On December 10, 2004, the 34 members of the colony became Michigan Alpha initiates of Phi Delta Theta.
Once re-established, Michigan Alpha enjoyed steady growth as the chapter restored its tradition of leading in the U of M Greek System, competing vigorously in intramural sports and accomplishing meaningful philanthropy projects as well as engaging in responsible social activities.
Today, Michigan Alpha is proud to remember its rich heritage while striving to ensure that the best years of the fraternity are yet to come.
The Michigan Alpha Alumni Association and Michigan Alpha Alumni
The foundation of Michigan Alpha is a brotherhood shared by an alumni body that totals more than 1,800 members -- approximately 1,100 living alums found in almost every state and many countries across the world.
Michigan Alpha alums have distinguished themselves in a wide range of endeavors including business, law, medicine, engineering, technology, academics/education, government, politics, military, professional sports, music, science, etc...
Established in 1895, the Michigan Alpha Alumni Association keeps these far afield alums in contact with each other as well as the active chapter membership. The Alumni Association also plays the key role of owner and landlord of the historic chapter house at 1437 Washtenaw.

Homecoming 2008
New and Old Alums Reminisce, Reconnect and
See Progress Made by Active Chapter
A strong contingent of alums visited Michigan Alpha's Homecoming Open House at 1437 Washtenaw. It was a classic crisp, sunny fall Saturday in Ann Arbor. The only tradition missing was a Wolverine win as the team fell to the Fighting Illini by a disappointing score of 45 to 20.
Prior to the mid-afternoon kickoff, alums parked for free on the lawn and enjoyed meeting their fellow alumni and active brothers. The actives had the house in top shape and put out breakfast foods with coffee to welcome returning alums as well as their guests.
Alumni attendees included Dr. Ted Ludwig '61, JT (Tom) Buck '77, Tom Kelly '82, Michael Reid '82, Greg Karmazin '87, Mike Rossi '87, Derek Adragna '88, Dan Dretler '88, Randy Scheid '88, Matt Stump '88,
Chris Shepard '88, Evan Isaacs '06, Jason Barley '06, Matt Scarleta '07, Kellyn Parker '07 and Jon Buck '08 among others who briefly dropped in to say hello.
The Alumni Association is considering ideas for expanding homecoming festivities next year. Homecoming 2009 will be held on September 26 when the Wolverines take on the
Indiana Hoosiers.

By Ethan D. David '10
As outgoing President of the Michigan Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta, it is my distinct pleasure to report to the alumni that the state of our fraternity on the U of M campus is strong and getting stronger thanks to the hard work of active chapter members and generous support of alums.
On behalf of the active chapter members, I express my deepest gratitude to the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association/Housing Corporation and Chapter Advisory Board. I also thank all the alums who contributed to the 2007-2008 Annual Fund. A total of 160 alums contributed an all-time record amount of $28,035 to the yearly giving initiative administered by the Alumni Association.
I especially want to convey the active chapter's appreciation to Alumni Association President JT (Tom) Buck '77 for his continued commitment and passion about the fraternity.

2008 Chapter House Maintenance Report
House in Great Shape, but More Work Needed
Keeping Michigan Alpha's 105 year old chapter house in top shape is a mission of the Alumni Association that never ends. Accomplishing this mission would not be possible without the strong support of alumni.
The chapter house is presently in the best shape it has been in decades. The Alumni Association invested approximately $500,000 during the early 2000s in a major renovation to improve the structural soundness, compliance with Ann Arbor Building Codes, security, historical integrity and comfort of the facility.
Each summer the Alumni Association does planned maintenance and improvements when financially feasible. In coming years, we hope to perform a number of upgrades to the house interior, porches, driveway/parking areas and yard.
Thanks to alums' generous donations to the Annual Fund, the Alumni Association was able to perform approximately $40,000 worth of significant maintenance projects during 2008 including:

Designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn, the Michigan Alpha Chapter House of Phi Delta Theta is one of his notable residential buildings. The house, finished in 1903, is on the Michigan Register of Historic Places. It is located at 1437 Washtenaw Avenue in Ann Arbor, Michigan near the southeast edge of the University of Michigan's Central Campus.
Contents |
The Michigan Alpha Chapter built their Georgian Revival style house between 1902 and 1903 as the fraternity's first permanent house on campus. Phi Delta Theta was the seventh fraternity established at the University of Michigan on November 28, 1864.[1] The house was built with funds from alumni, faculty members and active chapter members.
The three story house built by Koch Brothers construction firm replaced a mansion built by University of Michigan Librarian Andrew Ten Brook in the 1860s.[2] The house was constructed with red brick on a raised foundation featuring a projecting central portico entrance supported with doric columns. The house has thirteen bedrooms and can accommodate more than thirty residents.
On March 22, 1983, the State of Michigan Historic Preservation Office placed the house on the Michigan Register of Historic Places.[3] The house is considered historically and architecturally significant for two reasons. It is one of the earliest surviving examples of non-industrial, non-commercial designs by Kahn. It is also the oldest fraternity house on the University of Michigan campus still being used by the organization that built it.
In the early 2000s, the Michigan Alpha Chapter spent approximately $500,000 to completely renovate the house and restore its historic integrity.[4] Today, the exterior of the house is almost identical to Kahn's original design. Elements of the interior finish were modified following major fires in the early 1970s and building code upgrades during the recent renovation; however, most of the original floor plan remains unchanged.

The Michigan Alpha Heritage Project
Help Us to Preserve the Chapter's Rich History
Michigan Alpha has one of the most distinguished and longest histories of any fraternity on campus. Learning about the history of our notable house and the famous members is a key part of the active chapter's commitment to maintaining a sense of continuity in the fraternity and respect for tradition.
The Alumni Association has initiated the "Michigan Alpha Heritage Project" to better document, preserve and understand the history of the chapter.
During the pledge education program each semester, the next generation of Phis is taught about our historic house, chapter milestones and famous alums. The active members take great pride in knowing that they are following in the footsteps of men like brothers Tom Harmon '41, Bob Ufer '43 and Bob Chappuis '45 who are part of U of M lore.
While we have information about many of our most illustrious alums, the Alumni Association would like to collect photos, recollections and old Sword & Shields that tell the broader story about the history of the chapter.
Earlier this year, the Alumni Association contacted a number of alums with the longest membership in Michigan Alpha to see if they would be willing to share their memories.
We are pleased to report that Martin Newcomer '38, Robert Cooper '38 and Ted Spangler '40 favorably answered our appeal. They have provided us with fascinating pictures and recollections that give us new insight on fraternity life and the condition of the house in the late 1930's.
Now we are asking for your help with the project.
If you have stories, photos, Sword & Shields or memorabilia that would help to tell the story of Michigan Alpha's history, we ask that you send this information to the Secretary of the Alumni Association, Greg Karmazin '87, at 26110 Harbour Pointe Drive S., Harrison Township, MI 48045.
He can also be reached by e-mail at gkarm@aol.com. Greg will copy and return all materials that he is provided (if you want items returned).

Remembers Campus and Fraternity Life in the 1930s
The following is an excerpt of brother Newcomer's recollections submitted for the Michigan Alpha Heritage Project during May of 2008.
I entered the University of Michigan in 1931...There were no men's dorms to provide room and board in those days, so joining a fraternity was a comfortable alternative to a rooming house and eatery.
Phi Delt provided excellent dining, with steak served every Wednesday night. Room and board then was $75 a month, and tuition was $125 a semester in the Engine School.
A very strict auto ban was in effect with absolutely no use of a car except to carry out the duties of one's employment...One lucky Phi Delt was Phil Garvey, a graduate student from Michigan State, who was allowed to drive. Many times his two-door car would disgorge 6 or 7 passengers.
Following my sophomore year, I took two years off due to the Great Depression. I returned in 1935...The house had a housemother, Mrs. Loranger, and then Mrs. Mott, plus the houseman, Oliver, and the cook, Red.
Activities were tuned to sports. Sports figures achieving success were football stars: Tom Harmon, Whitey Wistert, Cece Cantrell and John Smithers. Ed Wilson starred as a wrestler, Al Saunders was captain of the golf team, Paul Keeler was a swimmer and E. Reed Low played hockey.
Reed Low was the instigator of the annual Mud Bowl game with the SAE house. This was a natural for Low, since he had always been a self-starter.
I have many happy memories of the fraternity.
Yours in the Bond,
Martin Newcomer '38

Actives Raise $10,000+ to Fight Lou Gehrig's Disease
Special Thanks for Alumni Support
Former Detroit Tiger Tom Timmerman joins Phis and Thetas at the event
Michigan Alpha active members held their annual "Walk & Roll" philanthropy fundraiser for ALS (commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease") on March 15, 2008. Including alumni support, the actives raised more than $10,000. We thank the twenty-two alums who individually contributed a total of $1,580 to ALS in conjunction with this event.
We also extend a special thanks to Derek Stevens '89 for his company foundation's $5,000 donation to ALS. Our appreciation is also expressed to Drew Dondero '89 for his role in facilitating this outstanding contribution.
In addition to the Michigan Alpha actives, members of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, U of M students and residents of Ann Arbor participated in the "Walk and Roll" which was held at the Sports Coliseum on campus.
ALS is a major national philanthropic focus of Phi Delta Theta. The disease claimed the life of Brother Lou Gehrig (Columbia University '25) and currently afflicts as many as 30,000 Americans. In Michigan, it is estimated that there are more than 1,000 people with ALS, and about 200 who are newly diagnosed on an annual basis.
ALS of Michigan Director Susan Burstein-Kahn said, "We greatly appreciate the hard work of the Michigan Phi Delts to raise much needed money to fight this disease. All the funds will be used to support the mission of ALS of Michigan."
This event marked the third year that Michigan Alpha has raised funds to benefit ALS. All combined, the three "Walk & Roll" events have raised a total of more $35,000.
